My Review:

I loved this book. It's filled with need-to-know information about how to take care of your dogs, should an emergency arise. It has short stories with each how-to, giving a step-by-step guide in an easily digestible and memorable way. Ive never seen a book like this presented in this way, and I'm all for it!

This has what to do all the way from if your dog is choking to if he's poisoned and even more. Most of the steps taken will give you time to get him to a vet so they can do a thorough inspection of your pet, but I can only imagine how many dogs lives this could save.

I never thought about keeping a first aid kit specifically for my dog, but I am now. I have a first-aid kit for myself and family members, but I should have one at the ready for my pets, too.

HIGHLY recommend. This book is important to read and digest. Anyone who reads this book will be glad they did.

Book Review: The Deseret Reckoning by Matthew L Huffman

My Review:

I very much enjoyed this story. I’ve found myself picking up books with more information on history, and that’s been super awesome because I was never too good at it in school.

First off, I LOATHE Andrew. But we’re supposed to. He’s very well done, and that goes for all the other characters too. Everyone’s so… real. They have their flaws and their talents, and they all feel like their own person rather than a caricature or shell.

I also really loved Susan, who is a strong female protagonist in her own right. She stands up for herself and she doesn't need anyone to tell her who she is. She knows, and its nice to watch her grow into a more comfortable, confident version of herself.

The effort that went into writing this book is obvious. You can feel the blood, sweat, and tears in every word. Ultimately, that's what pushed it up to 5 stars for me. A lot of love went into this book, and I'm not one to underappreciate that.

The action scenes are done well, and the story has nice pacing. I rather enjoyed reading about the man behind the letters and what it was like to travel and live back in those days.

Overall, it is a nice read, and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Summary:

Susan Kingsley is a historical acquisitions assistant with career ambitions at the Smithsonian Museum. She shares an apartment with her ex-husband, FBI special agent Andrew Harrison.

Susan has discovered copies of a series of letters from 1870 describing a wagon train from Santa Fe, New Mexico, bound for the Deseret Territory, the Mormon lands prior to Utah statehood, and a hidden mine.

The new owner of the letters, twenty-seven-year-old Tom Sullivan, a distant relative of the recipient, joins two older friends on a camping trip to discover the source of the letters. While Susan tracks Tom and his letters across Colorado, Wyoming, and Utah, Andrew tails her every step. After a chance encounter with Kat, a friendly face at a challenging time, a bolder, fiercer Susan emerges.

As Susan’s character arc grows, Andrew’s arc delves from petty disagreements to all-out fraud and deception, a cop with a grudge. What secrets will be revealed? What has been hidden in the mine? Will Susan succeed, or will Andrew sabotage her efforts and commit the ultimate crime?

Book Review: Mama I Owe You Nothing by Simmer Breeze

My Review:

What a breath of fresh air.

I thoroughly enjoyed this. It wasn’t what I expected in a good way, and takes on relevant and important topics with facts and articles to back up the points of view, not to mention personal stories from the author.

What do we owe one another? Do we? What is a human life, and where does it begin? Should we be forced to take care of people who have scarred us?

This book held me captive the entire way through. It was engaging and had me hanging on every word, every new fact it was throwing at me. I learned things I didn’t know, and assisted me in hardening my resolve on personal opinions I have.

Highly recommend and very much enjoyed.

Summary:

Discover the essential value of caring for our aging family and the responsibility we have for those closest to us. In today’s hyper-individualistic and self-obsessed world, the concept of responsibility is often overshadowed by endless talk about freedoms and rights. But how does this distort the essential ties between parents and children? Do we have a special obligation to care for those who brought us into the world? And how can we rediscover the essential familial connections that helped us flourish for generations? Featuring a thought-provoking exploration of the key attitudes and unspoken issues that face the modern family, this groundbreaking book examines the pervasive attitudes of today’s world, exposing the disturbing lack of responsibility people feel towards taking care of their parents and grandparents. From elderly care homes to retirement villages, a generation of parents are increasingly finding themselves abandoned, forgotten, and ignored. We all have someone who brought us into the world – but with changing times, how many of us forget to appreciate the ones who raised us? This book seeks to revitalize the sense of duty in modern minds, sharing valuable perspectives that will strengthen family ties, combat the rise in loneliness, and undermine the implicit selfishness lurking in our freedom-focused ethos. Mama I Owe You Nothing seeks to challenge our assumptions, outlining the vital responsibility we have towards every member of our family, along with how deepening our appreciation for our loved ones can reverse the increasing fragmentation of our society. Are you ready to reawaken your sense of appreciation and responsibility? Then scroll up and order your copy today.

Book Review: The Other Ones by Timothy Dew

My Review:

Such an interesting concept and world. I really like the idea of doppelgängers having their own world opposite of us, and all that entails. The idea that they can't coexist in the same plane is such a cool concept, and the fact they automatically become hostile makes sense to me.

The plan to overtake Earth and live there instead of their home is a good one. Even though I see the flaws in such an undertaking (including killing every last person on Earth), every big plan such as that one has quite a few flaws followers will look over because it doesn't go with their agenda. I also feel like the crowds of people were a bit too accepting and agreeable, but it didn't take away from anything.

Overall, the story is well done. However, with how much cussing is in this, it seems like it should be for an older audience, not someone who's still in school.

We watch Tim slowly become more and more like the doppelgänger he's trying to take down. As things have wound down in the end, we see him thinking back on the chaos he'd gone through, and he remembers his doppelgänger telling everyone they're exactly the same (or at least cut from the same cloth). The doppelgängers are supposedly opposites of us, but even a lie holds a thread of truth.

4 stars.

Summary:

From Average Teen to Dystopian Warrior

In 'The Other Ones,' we follow the gripping journey of Tim, an ordinary teenager with extraordinary aspirations. He yearns for a life beyond the mundane, for something more significant. For power, something he's never really grasped before.

But destiny takes an unexpected turn when a mysterious portal whisks Tim and a few friends away to the fantastical realm of TimWion and the tumultuous country of Takito. It's both an escape and a perilous sentence.

In this new world, Tim encounters his doppelganger, Tavir, a tyrannical dictator with a thirst for power, much like his own desires. The clash between the two Tims propels them into a whirlwind of battles, hardships, destruction, and heartache. Loyalty becomes their salvation, betrayal an overwhelming tide, and death a constant, lurking presence.

As Tim grapples with his transformation through this dystopian fantasy, the line between his innate self and newfound strength blurs. Tavir's menacing shadow looms ever closer, and by the story's conclusion, it becomes clear that more than familiar faces binds these two souls.

Book Review: SCUM ISLAND: Stand for Truth No Matter the Cost by Michael Lee

My Review:

Highly Engaging

Immersed in a brutal video game, our mc has a job to do: take down the vile company that has subjected them to this horror. The twists are nicely done and the fight scenes keep you on your toes. I really enjoyed this one!

However, although there were some nice quotes, there were a few unique phrases I felt were repeated too many times. It took me out of the story. But the good thing is, this story is easy to get back into. It’s quick and I absolutely love the ending. You don’t want to miss this one.

Summary:

Fong, a 30-year-old man who dared to stand for truth, is trapped in the deadly game of Scum Island. Driven to expose an evil corporation, Fong's integrity leads to his capture and placement on the island, where survival becomes a perverse form of entertainment. Stranded and left to the whims of a brutal rating system, Fong and his fellow captives must earn fame points—through battling monstrous foes and one another—for the bare necessities.

As they gather points, they navigate the omnipresent threat of a kill switch implanted by the corporation, a numerical tattoo on their arms, and the shifting alliances of the game. But survival is only the beginning. As the stakes rise, an unexpected betrayal and shocking revelations compel Fong and his band of survivors to challenge the corporation at its very core.

Prepare for heart-stopping action, emotional intrigue, and unexpected twists in this uncut downable narrative where the line between game and reality blurs, and survival is just the first move on the board.

My Review:

I liked this one. I didn’t really have time to connect with Zak, and I think it could have used that extra time. With just a tad more length, I think it would have been nice figuring out the puzzle right next to him instead of him just kind of… solving it. But it’s enjoyable and quick nonetheless!

Summary:

An artsy mystery short story A prominent artist’s painting from an art dealer’s estate has gone missing and two cryptic clues are the only cues to its whereabouts. Will the deceased art dealer's trophy wife or his estranged son locate the painting first and what on earth does Blake Shelton have to do with this? Let the games begin!

My Review:

What a masterful tale. I've not felt so jazzed about reading a book while reading it in a long time, but this one certainly takes the cake. It's in a category all on its own. This is definitely a new favorite, and I will be starting the second book tomorrow. I love the characters and the twists and the descriptions. Everything was perfect and breathtaking, and I can't wait to see what comes next.

I wanted so badly to take a highlighter and highlight all the quotes that struck me, even the funny ones. It had me crying and laughing. I don't know what I would have done in either of their shoes, but I love they were smart enough to figure it out. Clever and creative, this is one of my new favorite books.

Summary:

Thou shalt kill.

A world with no hunger, no disease, no war, no misery. Humanity has conquered all those things, and has even conquered death. Now scythes are the only ones who can end life—and they are commanded to do so, in order to keep the size of the population under control.

Citra and Rowan are chosen to apprentice to a scythe—a role that neither wants. These teens must master the “art” of taking life, knowing that the consequence of failure could mean losing their own.

My Review:

It’s a nice short story that leaves you wondering. I could see a whole book mad out of this, but then it might lose its charm. I rather enjoyed this quick read. It gave just enough to set the stage, but not so much as to bog you down with the details. Well done.

Summary:

Odd things happen when nature is disrupted. Something sinister is happening in Familiar, Maine, as the quiet, little town is suddenly upended by unnerving events in this speculative short story.

Book Review: Rise of Fenrir: A LitRPG Adventure by S.D. McKittrick

My Review:

The beginning was interesting, watching our mc realize he isn't human anymore but a wolf, and I thought the stat updates every so often were going to get old, but they didn't. I do enjoy power-scaling books, but I feel like it scaled too quickly. I think it would have been great to watch him become OP alongside the girls he ended up becoming friends with, although I understand why it wasn't written that way.

Overall, it was a good story. Fast-paced, creative, and interesting. The ending slowed a bit, and although I did find myself enjoying it, the urgency of the situation and the pace at which they were moving was at a disconnect. To an extent, Fen was slowly warming back up to humans, but the last bit, I kind of wish he just kind of barreled through everything and flexed his OP abilities. I love when power-scaling books get to show off the impressively insane character they've been building since the first page, like Dragonball with Goku and his constant growth.

If you want a high-fantasy, action/adventure, RPG/DnD-esque book, with isekai this is it.

Summary:

What would you do if you woke up in the body of a wolf?

Fen wakes in the forest of an unfamiliar world with barely any memories of the night before. What he can piece together is one of two things. He either died and was reincarnated, or this was an isekai scenario. What he doesn't know is which. Only a brief introduction to the world tells him that he has skills and can learn magic. But it's up to him to figure out how. And for a wolf in the middle of the forest, what is he to do?

Follow Fen as he learns how to evolve his skills and level his attributes, seemingly from the most unusual way possible. His life takes him through the years as he grows alongside an unassuming elf. When their paths cross eighteen years later, Fen is thrown into a situation where he's forced to mingle with the human races for the first time.

Kicked out of his forest, Fen will have to regain his humanity if he is to secure his place among the races. But in eighteen years he will face something far harder than anything before. When at attack on the human city he dwells in pulls him back into his destructive ways, he has to make a hard decision. He will have to combine his humanity and his bestial side if he wants to come out on top.

Book Review: The 3 Cs of Creating Change: Making an Impact Through Connections, Community & Culture by Ace Mamun

My Review:

I have quite a few feelings on the topics inside this book. It seems to cover everything from social media to current events and beyond. I loved the beginning the most, the middle lost me, and the end was a nice wrap-up. The structure of this book is well done and easy to follow and understand, and the key notes at the end of (almost) every chapter was nice to read through. Seeing it condensed into one or two sentences really drove what'd I'd just read home, and that tiny repetition helped the topics stick in my brain.

Although I enjoyed the philosophical section and the parts about altruism toward the end, I'd like to kind of talk about how interesting the beginning is. It talks about social media and how we interact with one another now rather than twenty-plus years ago. It had me hooked, and I ate up every word. That being said, even with topics where I didn't agree with the author, I still appreciated moments that were handled in a very kind way.

Overall, it's a solid book. It's worth checking out if you get the chance.

Summary:

'The 3 Cs of Creating Change – Connection, Community & Culture,' is everyone's guide to making the world better.

Explore a rich diversity of ideas presented with
actionable insights and examples, fascinating scientific and historical facts, as well as meaningful guidance and checklists. Unlock your superpower to become a powerful catalyst for a better tomorrow.

This thought-provoking book by TEDx speaker and founder of Good International, Ace Mamun, explores how
all of us can leverage our connection, community, and culture to make a significant impact in an increasingly interconnected world.

This
book offers practical steps for translating collective potential into action, and emphasizes the role each of us plays in shaping the world we aspire to live in. 'The 3 Cs of Creating Change' is more than a book - it's an empowering call to action for dreamers, activists, and anyone who wants to leave a positive footprint in the world.

Book Review: Things My Husband Said by Jennifer Free

My Review:

My heart! Not every marriage is perfect, and this definitely wasn't one of them. Sometimes something's outside is perfect, but it's a shell hiding the rot within. To anyone in a hurtful/abusive relationship, I wish you well and I hope you figure out what your worth is. You are worth more than gold.

Jennifer recounts her past marriage and how the effects of her ex corroded anything that was good in her life. I'm so glad she was able ot get out of that situation and find her self-worth. True love doesn't need to be a romantic type of love, as she discovered when she would lay eyes on her daughter, and I love that sentiment. If it weren't for her daughter, she'd probably be stuck in the same cycle of abuse, so she really was a Godsend.

It broke my heart to read about her journey, but I'm elated at the ending: a new beginning with an abundance of sunshine.

Summary:

In Things My Husband Said, author Jennifer Free outlines the painful reality of covert verbal and emotional abuse in a marriage and the detailed plan she developed over several years that ultimately empowered her to safely leave while maintaining primary physical custody of her daughter without a lengthy legal battle. This important work:
  • Shines a necessary spotlight on marital abuse that does not leave physical bruises – but still causes harm – by sharing the ugly covert verbal abuse Free endured for years, one raw line at a time.
  • Includes the detailed plan Free developed to safely leave with her daughter.
  • Speaks to and validates the pain of those victims who are still in abusive marriages as well as those who have been able to escape.
  • Serves as necessary required reading in continuing education programs for Family Court professionals and victim advocates.

Book Review: Once Upon a Broken Heart by Stephanie Garber

My Review:

My controversial opinion on this book: it was eh. Felt like it was just going from one plot point to the next to get the story out as fast as possible, and I didn't really connect with any of the characters. That being said, I did enjoy the sister and--ALWAYS--Jacks.

I had the same kind of feeling toward Caraval as well, but I enjoyed Legendary a lot more (I connected with Drusilla more, but even then, her thing with Jacks just felt like a plot device instead of something significant that made me want to feel bad for anything happening to either of them). I'm just a sucker for guys like Jacks, what can I say?

I didn't really like the mc. I just... didn't. Love the hair color though, and that she had some redeemable qualities, but I was kind of over her after her introduction.

Anyway, it was a fine read and kept me entertained enough to keep reading, but I wouldn't reread or anything. I do plan on reading the second book, considering the second book of the original Caraval Trilogy was my favorite, so we'll see how that goes.

Summary:

How far would you go for happily ever after?

For as long as she can remember, Evangeline Fox has believed in true love and happy endings... until she learns that the love of her life will marry another.

Desperate to stop the wedding and to heal her wounded heart, Evangeline strikes a deal with the charismatic but wicked Prince of Hearts. In exchange for his help, he asks for three kisses, to be given at the time and place of his choosing.

But after Evangeline’s first promised kiss, she learns that bargaining with an immortal is a dangerous game—and that the Prince of Hearts wants far more from her than she’d pledged. He has plans for Evangeline, plans that will either end in the greatest happily ever after or the most exquisite tragedy...

Book Review: Even White Trash Zombies Get the Blues by Diana Rowland

11/9/2023

Picture

My Review: (Spoiler Alert)

I liked this book better than the first. The science stuff had me enthralled. Love the fact that it's a parasite instead of a virus, and that it's harder to turn zombies than with just a bite. I wish the rest of the book was more like the end, and I wish Angel felt a little less educated (there are a lot of big words someone who dropped out of high school wouldn't know, or even someone in Angel's shoes, for that matter), and I wish she made life a bit more challenging for herself. I wanted her to make tiny or even big mistakes that she had to learn from. She kind of skates by making the right decisions and not really... being wrong? Other than that, I really liked the book. If she was more flawed, I think this series would become one of my favorites.

Summary:

Angel Crawford is finally starting to get used to life as a brain-eating zombie, but her problems are far from over. Her felony record is coming back to haunt her, more zombie hunters are popping up, and she’s beginning to wonder if her hunky cop-boyfriend is involved with the zombie mafia. Yeah, that’s right—the zombie mafia.

Throw in a secret lab and a lot of conspiracy, and Angel’s going to need all of her brainpower—and maybe a brain smoothie as well—in order to get through it without falling apart.

My Review:

Really enjoyed this one. Wish there wasn’t so much of God’s name in vain (or that it was capitalized in the least), but it kept me reading and I really liked it a lot. This breed of zombies is unique and I actually really love the mc. She’s a breath of fresh air, and I’m SO proud of her later in the book. Sure, it took dying to turn a new leaf, but she still did it. I can’t wait for the next book.

I loved seeing the name Zeke the Zombie because that's the main character of my own book. But moving on...

I love the way this is written. The pacing and the descriptions are great. It reminds me a LOT of iZombie (one of my favorite series), with a lot less detective stuff. The book isn't actually that gorey or bloody, which is something you'd expect with zombie books--but I'm not complaining. I think it was well done, and I really enjoyed Angel's voice.

Also. I think it’s funny that people are complaining about how gross zombies are… for a book about zombies. What… what did you expect?

Summary:

Angel Crawford is a Loser.

Living with her alcoholic deadbeat dad in the swamps of southern Louisiana, she's a high school dropout with a pill habit and a criminal record who's been fired from more crap jobs than she can count. Now on probation for a felony, it seems that Angel will never pull herself out of the downward spiral her life has taken.

That is, until the day she wakes up in the ER after overdosing on painkillers. Angel remembers being in a horrible car crash, but she doesn't have a mark on her. To add to the weirdness, she receives an anonymous letter telling her there's a job waiting for her at the county morgue—and that it's an offer she doesn't dare refuse.

Before she knows it she's dealing wth a huge crush on a certain hunky deputy and a brand new addiction: an overpowering craving for brains. Plus, her morgue is filling up with the victims of a serial killer who decapitates his prey—just when she's hungriest!

Angel's going to have to grow up fast if she wants to keep this job and stay in one piece. Because if she doesn't, she's dead meat.

Literally.

My Review:

What a cute children’s book. Not everyone can have cats or dogs or animals with fur. This book teaches you tons of cool facts about some popular reptiles and amphibians.

The images are colorful and eye-popping, and it’s super easy to read. One of my best friends had a bearded dragon for the longest time, and he loved him so much. This is great for anyone interested in learning more or thinking about adopting one of these animals!

My Review:

What an awesome book.

This is 100% worth a read, especially if you enjoy rock music. It’s filled with inspiring sentiments and fired me up to continue making music. Pop music has become INSANE, not to mention it’s like they’re made to be perfect. As someone who’s sick of that, it was refreshing to read about rock music and the history and movement behind it. Rock has always resonated with me more with its deep emotion and experimental tones. This book has reignited my passion for music, and I cannot recommend it enough. 5 stars!
