Book Review: The Tides of Retribution by Steven Bissett | The Earthborn Saga Vol IV

Review:

This book highlights all the characters, and I feel like Hunt takes a step back to let them shine.

The moments between our OG crew and other characters they meet are wonderful, especially the playful or fun ones. Tense moments are well done, and the creativity stays consistent with the rest of the series so far. I found my jaw dropping at plot twists, and I was on the edge of my seat for the fight scenes. I've realized I'm the kind of person to enjoy one-on-one fighting over dogfights, but that's on me, and not the book. The dogfights scenes are well done, I just prefer/enjoy the melee combat moments.

Above all, I loved this book. It's on par with the third book, in my opinion, and it feels like it's setting up a lot of stuff without dragging. I love, love, love the revelation about the Devourers and what they're doing with those they take prisoner. It's super cool and unique.

On to book 5!

Deluge: The People That Melt in the Rain #1 by Carolyn Watson-Dubisch and Mike Dubisch

My Review:

I love the creativity of this short comic-style story. People who melt in the rain due to a town-wide curse? Frogs falling from the sky? The town of Deluge is a curious place, and I would love to read more. I know the next one comes out in a few months, and I look forward to reading it.

The artwork is well done, and I appreciate the color palate. It's calming, and adds to the whimsical nature of these insane things happening.

All in all, I loved these first chapters to this series, and I can't wait for more.

Summary:

12 year old Laura was just a normal girl from Seattle when her mother decided to move to a mysterious town in the mid-west. The moment they arrive in their new home hundreds of frogs rain from the sky. Her quirky new neighbor has a house full of knickknacks and odd tiny creatures beckoning from the shadows, and there's a terrible curse on the town that makes every summer storm a life threatening event. Welcome to the town of Deluge.

The Woebegones: ALEASHA by A. Noel Biddy

My Review:

This is my favorite book in this series. I simply could not hate Aleasha, for she was just trying to survive and protect/take care of her children in an unforgiving world. This book also was the clearest to me to read, and it was really humbling to remember I live in the US, where freedom of speech, individuality, and religion are a norm, not to mention the way women are treated.

There was only one part of the book that I found unnecessary, and rather we it wasn’t in there, but compared to the other books, I believe this one is the most tame, and the best paced. I couldn’t put this one down, and it got secret reactions from me, because I cared about these characters more than in the other books.

I also loved that everything came together in this last book for me, and I was putting puzzle pieces of characters from the other books together as I read, which was a really cool mental activity.

4.5 stars.

Summary:

Set in the war-torn and poverty-stricken area of Jeddah the Residence daily struggle is a nightmare they hope will one day find an end. And while the agony is relentless, this troubled tale of The Woebegones follows Aleasha. A nurse whose commitment to the wounded is faultless but it's her deep fascination with death and morbidity that allows her striking personality to come alive. But once at the summit of her contentment a tragedy snatches at Aleasha’s heart causing her focus to be outraged by a crime that ruins her family. One that is perverse and has Aleasha clasped in such an unlawful and unforgivable state as she is forced to face the universal storms of her individuality, her role as a mother and of course the examination of life when horror is faced.

The Woebegones: MARY by A. Noel Biddy

My Review:

I'd like to start out by saying I love the way this is formatted. It starts at the last chapter and ends with the first. I feel like this kind of story worked extremely well with this formatting, as it kept me more interactive with this story than the others.

Now the rest.

This book made me feel sick quite a bit. There were paragraphs or even pages I'd entirely skip over because my stomach and heart couldn't handle what was happening. It was sickening to me. This is almost as dark as dark can get, and not in a fun way, in my opinion.

This book needs a slew of trigger warnings, and I had to read or do something out between bouts of reading this one to clear my head and remove certain images from my mind.

All in all, A. Noel Biddy does a fantastic job at creating deplorable and flawed characters. These books are like train wrecks you can't peel your eyes from at times. I do appreciate the parallels in each book, and the line about the chainsaw made me laugh out loud, considering what happened in Franky, and it was nice to have some answers about the debit card and who Natasha was in Persephone.

I'm sure it'd be interesting to read this in the proper order, but I cannot bring myself to reread this book. I can see where its self-proclaimed "offensiveness" might come from, but for most of the books in this series, it's more of a disgust for situations, characters, or chapters in my opinion.

Summary:

This tale in The Woebegones series follows the glamorous, divine, holy, sophisticated and backward character of Mary who believes that her purity can bring peace to the world. And though her dreams are righteous as she pursues the path as a pageant Queen, along her way her faith, purity, and indeed her character are tested to the brink. And it is when she plunges into the heart of darkness that her true power is found which causes the underworld of filth to take heed of the virgin who is so naturally gifted in being the force to be reckoned with that invites all unnecessary evils to face that are shocking, perverse and deeply disturbing.

Kids Book Review: Saving the restaurant by Mazal Danto

My Review:

4.5

Cute and super colorful! I wish a few of the images were more dynamic or had different angles, but the story is great. I love that when Leah had an idea, the adults listened and expanded upon it, instead of shooting her down because she's a kid. This helps kids build confidence in themselves and their ideas. Loved it.

The Woebegones: PERSEPHONE by A. Noel Biddy

My Review:

All I have to say is poor Persephone. I got a little lost a few times in the beginning, but by the middle, I was really enjoying the book. After that, I got a little bored with all the long dithyrambic-like inner monologues, and she never seemed to learn her lesson on leaving her children by themselves.

All in all, I think this book stands at about the same level as Franky in my opinion. I loved seeing Edward's point of view with their relationship. Having both of their viewpoints helped me understand the depth of care and devotion to one another, even though the beginning was strange. BUT that strange beginning came to light with a twist that I thought was super intriguing.

I feel like Persephone and Teresa are really the only two of this series so far that had nice moments to breathe between bouts of tragedy and horror, and I thoroughly appreciated it.

Summary:

The story of Persephone is an unrelentingly bleak tale of the lost one who wishes to be found and set free from the harsh brutalities of life. Sadly through a series of events where her body, mind and soul define the fall of her character and notorious decisions made when completely at rock bottom it is then Persephone must face the mortifying truth of her character and with her eyes wide open with the desire to improve and better herself will she in the end be granted a new direction that returns the love she yearns and with a leap of faith be granted everything she ever wanted.

Fearsome Dream by Eva Chase Book Review

4/13/2024

My Review:

FINALLY.

This series got so repetitive, and I almost wish it was a trilogy. The middle books are unnecessary, and they're like "we're trapped" and "we never get to rest", but they're always on or inside each other to "relax", and they don't do a lot of research on the actual task at hand. So it's a no wonder they don't have adequate information on what they're getting into.

I love the way Eva Chase writes, but this book was everywhere. The series especially.

Riva is a great character. In fact they all are--until the last few books. They kind of morph into one person and the guys, who were their own person in the first book, just became playthings for Riva. Also, it's like they forgot what their own powers do. And some of the decision they made felt like it was just to lengthen out the plot. The plot in which I was really looking forward to (since I don't like spicy scenes) from the first book, but it fell so flat. And there were so many needless deaths and not a lot of time to process them. I don't know. This one wasn't for me at all. I was so excited, but everything fell flat.

Also, they're supposed to be super powerful, right? But they keep getting trapped or attacked or beaten by kids who haven't had as much time to craft their powers and abilities. ESPECIALLY now that our main group can share their powers. They should have no difficulty whatsoever taking down almost anything thrown at them.

I'm not sure if I'll be reading more books by Eva Chase, but if you're into polyamory, spicy scenes, and a sprinkle of dark fantasy/scifi, this is the book for you.

Summary:

We are blood. And so are they...

We're finally free—and we intend to stay that way. But our most dangerous enemy has plans that could upend the entire world.

To carry out those plans, he's making more like us. More people twisted into something monstrous and forced to serve his psychotic ends.

My guys and I have to stop him. It's our only hope of getting the peace we've dreamed of—for us and everyone else we've come to care about.

But how can we even fight when the foes standing in our way... are shadowbloods just like us?

The Woebegones: Franky by A Noel Biddy

4/11/2024

Picture

My Review:

Franky is a heart wrenching story of a girl who guides others to the path of beauty--one she believes she can never walk down. Her entire focus in on outward beauty, and not within, and that is ultimately her downfall, in my opinion.

Her brother sucks, a social media influencer who does terribly mean pranks. His attitude is rewarded within his family, which is the opposite of what he deserves.

Franky has kind tendencies, ones that fly out the window once she has her surgery--and that's when everything tumbles down. No one is innocent, and no one's hands are clean in this book.

The level and depth of Franky's situation is well done, and will have your heart wrenching for her and the decisions she makes. All in all, this one rivals with what I think of Teresa's book, but there were some parts where I got lost or confused because of the way this book is written.

4 stars.

Summary:

Gifted in making others look so beautiful and celebrated, the story of Franky Sardna is one of unfortunate circumstance, elegant transition and horrifying evolution. When a certain family member passes away the door for change is opened and when Franky grabs hold of this life changing venture the spiral of mayhem is unfortunately set as the path towards beauty and perfection has severe consequences to fear.

Heartless Foe by Eva Chase Book Review

4/10/2024

My Review:

Finally. I've finished the book. 2.5

I think this book and the last one could have been skipped. They're both repetitive, and all six of them are damsel in distresses, especially the guys. Only Riva has ideas, it seems, and, although I enjoyed their autonomy in the past books (because they weren't just tools used for the mc to get off), this one seemed to lack more of that. Sure, they were locked in a pretty cage (again), but come on.

I don't know. I was bored. This book and the last one. Hopefully the next one gets somewhat better. This book has a solid ending, I guess, but there's so much empty space in this book of no one doing anything but one another.

Don't get me wrong, I love the way Eva Chase writes, and I love the depth of the characters, but this series has got me in a chokehold of eye rolls and snarky comments. It definitely feels like one of those books you don't believe when someone says they "read it for the plot" if you know what I'm saying. All I want is more story and less "we're super powerful but helpless and trapped, let's go blow off some steam by having group alone time."

I try to keep my reviews positive, so I will say these things: I love the style in writing, the creativity with the powers (especially the development toward the end), and the mc Riva, who is strong in her own way. The relationships between her and the guys (I've come to realize I don't like harems through this series) seem genuine and deeply rooted.

But yeah. I can't wait to finish this series.

Summary:

I thought we'd faced the worst possible horrors already. I was wrong.

My men and I have fought the guardians who held us captive for so long. Refused to let them harness our powers yet again.

But there's another villain lurking in the shadows. One who doesn't even pretend to care about anyone's interests other than his own.

With every move he makes, I feel one step closer to breaking. How can we ever escape while a man like this controls our future?

The path to freedom could lie in the past we left behind. But our history holds secrets that are just as likely to destroy me...

Captured Fate by Eva Chase Book Review!

4/6/2024

My Review:

2.5

Nah. I don't like harems.

I still hate Jacob. I like Griffin, he's growing on me. Zian is best boy currently. I normally don't like spicy scenes, so I of course didn't like these. The premise from the first book (toward the end) was good and had me interested, but this one just felt like a repeat of past events. They escape long enough to do the dirty, they get captured. They escape long enough to do the dirty, they get captured. I got bored in the middle of the book and I just wanted to be done with it, so I pushed to finish. The new guy over them doesn't seem so bad. He kind of reminds me of Chase Graves from iZombie, actually. I don't think he necessarily deserves what he got in the end, but, yeah, these people deserve to be free. No one should be in captivity. Anyway. Yeah. This book was the blandest so far, Griffin being one of the only positive points.

On to the next one.

Summary:

Is this captivity... or a second chance?

My men and I lost our bid for freedom. But nothing in our new prison is quite what I expected.

That doesn't mean I'm going to stop fighting. I just have to make sure I pick the right battles. Especially when it isn't just our lives but those of the kids who came after us on the line.

If I'm going to be more than a monster, I need to figure out who the real monsters are—and take back everything they've stolen from us before it's too late.

Book review! The Beastmaster Sword Adventures Book II

Loved it!

I remember loving the first book, and I was so excited to pick up the second. I forgot how cool it is to see all the stories this sword lives through. This is the only series I’ve seen that does that, and does it in such an interesting and awe-inspiring way. Not to mention the battle scenes are so well done, and the words used create such a vivid painting in your head.

The creativity of these stories is unparalleled, and like it just stepped out of a D&D 5e compendium. The characters are well-rounded, flawed, and have such well-defined backgrounds.

I can’t wait for the next book, as this one ends in a cliffhanger and with such an amazing new creature I hope we learn more about.

Awesome read!

The Crucible of Titans: The Earthborn Saga Vol. III by Steven Bissett Review!

My Review:

What an amazing third book to the series. This one is by far my favorite.

I love the interactions between the characters. The stiffness from the first book is completely gone, and I just love how the lore keeps building upon itself. It's gotten easier to remember, and it helps that we're gently reminded about the many happenings in the past and present.

By now, I've grown used to the long chapters. I still wish they were shorter, but it doesn't take away from the story at all.

THE ENDING THOUGH. Ohhhh my goodness. My heart. I'm dying to know what happens later in the series, and I cannot reiterate enough that how WORTH IT this book series is. It gets better with each book, each chapter. Bissett knows the universe these characters in backwards and forwards, and I'm so here for it. Every new twist has me dropping my jaw and devouring whatever comes next.

I love this series. I can't wait for more. Absolutely worth the read.

The Woebegones: ANNIE by A. Noel Biddy

4/4/2024

Picture

My Review:

3.5 stars.

The good: I appreciated how deeply we delved into Annie's mind. I could feel her pain, and I understood, more or less, why she was the way she was. I enjoyed the gothic style of writing infused with the modern-day atmosphere; it gave me Carrie vibes, honestly.

The bad: I don't believe every sentence or every paragraph needs poetic, flowery writing. This made it take longer to read each paragraph, and I felt like I kept rereading lines because I'd get lost. There were no dialogue tags, nor dialogue (with dialogue), and I think the book needs a second revision for editing, as some paragraphs lasted four pages.

All in all, this book has so much potential. The dark nature of Annie and her extensive inner monologues made me curious about her, but I felt like a lot of the actions and spoken parts got lost in the poetic writing.

Overall, it was an interesting read, I just was irritated with how long the paragraphs were and it was annoying trying to reread a paragraph to understand what just happened, only to be wrong the second time I read it. But Annie is developed and well-rounded, and I'm not surprised by her actions because there was so much inner dialogue. Everything she did made sense to me, even if I disagreed with what she was doing.

I also loved the imagery and symbolism of the ending.

Summary:

Haunted by the enemies of her past, Annie used her unique imagination to crush those who crossed her as her art was a way to cope with the pain, where the horrifying dreams allowed her to prosper and become galvanised in the written word that she pledged to fulfil in her destiny. But sadly as fate twists and a nightmare is confronted Annie knows that the only way to escape the pain of the past is to act with no mercy in the present.

My Review:

This book is so far my favorite in this strange series. 4.5 stars

Although the paragraphs are still far too long, and there are moments were I grew lost, I enjoyed this one. Where Annie was extensive in its flowery descriptions, this one was more straightforward.

Teresa is mourning the death of her child and loathes everyone and everything that doesn't deserve to have a child, themselves. Her ex is a prick, but her family was trying their best to help her through this tough time. She's slowly going insane with grief, haunted by the death of her son, and she doesn't bat an eye at it--which makes sense, considering her state of mind.

The depth of depression she goes into is painful, but done in such a way where I felt like it didn't trigger anything. That's also my personal opinion, but I feel this way because of how it was written. I can't imagine the pain of losing a child.

All in all, a good read. I also like seeing the other characters in this series popping up, so that was super enjoyable.

Summary:

How could she cope without her Magic? The thought never came to her until that day changed her life for good. And it is in this heart wrenching landscape that we follow Teresa as she seeks to escape this consistent pain that has her frozen in time. An experience that is unrelentingly visceral, inconceivable and profound. Yet when the acts of true courage, humility, dignity and above all sacrifice are made then there is a chance for all virtuous grace and miracle to be affectionately rewarded within the painful acceptance of loss…
