Every muscle in Nickoli's body tensed with that one word, and he sprang. I released my hands and shoved myself into a standing position just in time to avoid him crushing into me. Something seemed animalistic about him, but he wasn't a wolf like me. He shot to his feet and slashed a hand in my direction. Suddenly, his fingers weren’t fingers anymore. The first knuckle joint of each finger had transformed into a pointed claw. I had to force myself back down to the ground to avoid the attack. A shapeshifter. When I righted myself, I felt dizzy; Majie was right about one thing; I was weak. If I couldn't get out of here soon, he would defeat me. I squirmed between him and the couch to prevent getting pinned against the wall. Majie had left the door unguarded; all I needed to do was get to it. He came at me again. I dodged by rolling in the door's direction. Throughout all the fighting, his eyes remained vacant. He looked fierce yet placid at the same time. |
I sprang back to avoid his kick. Another foot closer to the door. The pendant at his neck pulsed before each move he made. Could it be some sort of holding curse? Majie said they held some members against their will; maybe if I could get the choker off, he could help me escape. I dared not look at Majie to see if she saw through my plan; a glance could give it all away if she hadn’t. This time when he attacked, I stepped toward him instead of away. I grabbed the choker with both hands and kicked his torso as I yanked. The choker broke, and he stumbled backward. I wanted to howl with victory, but it would have been short-lived if I did. He launched into me and tackled me to the floor. Bewildered, I put my hands up to defend my face. His eyes no longer looked vacant. They seemed scared. He landed a hard punch on my left side. "Run!" I wheezed. My vision went blurry, and the light in the room started to sparkle. I hadn't hit my head, but I didn’t have the time to figure out what was happening. |
Warning: this book contains explicit content. Don't be deceived by the pretty pastel cover, the novel discusses dark and suggestive themes that make it 18+! The whole point of the book is that the protagonist is able to survive the worst parts of a sociatal deconstruction through the love interest's mere existence, so he goes through several hard trials to get there. But it's an age progression novel, so there is a lot of maturation and self empowerment to balance out all the bad.

“Then tell me, little one, what wish could possibly be strong enough to keep your will to survive alive for the rest of time?” All it took was a singular, heroic act of unconditional kindness for Marverick to fall in love with her Highness Santan yet her warm words of endearing encouragement carry him through the rest of his difficult life, keeping him soft and tender through the darkest pits of hell as the supernatural world descends into chaos around them.
From the author: This is just the first book of a very slowburn romance that will span over the entire series. I'm already working on a second novel of this series!
And props to the artist that made the design, @yulidominik ! He's a super cool, talented guy! Tropes: love at first sight, found family, struggle to power |
