Book Review: The Other Ones by Timothy Dew

My Review:

Such an interesting concept and world. I really like the idea of doppelgängers having their own world opposite of us, and all that entails. The idea that they can't coexist in the same plane is such a cool concept, and the fact they automatically become hostile makes sense to me.

The plan to overtake Earth and live there instead of their home is a good one. Even though I see the flaws in such an undertaking (including killing every last person on Earth), every big plan such as that one has quite a few flaws followers will look over because it doesn't go with their agenda. I also feel like the crowds of people were a bit too accepting and agreeable, but it didn't take away from anything.

Overall, the story is well done. However, with how much cussing is in this, it seems like it should be for an older audience, not someone who's still in school.

We watch Tim slowly become more and more like the doppelgänger he's trying to take down. As things have wound down in the end, we see him thinking back on the chaos he'd gone through, and he remembers his doppelgänger telling everyone they're exactly the same (or at least cut from the same cloth). The doppelgängers are supposedly opposites of us, but even a lie holds a thread of truth.

4 stars.

Summary:

From Average Teen to Dystopian Warrior

In 'The Other Ones,' we follow the gripping journey of Tim, an ordinary teenager with extraordinary aspirations. He yearns for a life beyond the mundane, for something more significant. For power, something he's never really grasped before.

But destiny takes an unexpected turn when a mysterious portal whisks Tim and a few friends away to the fantastical realm of TimWion and the tumultuous country of Takito. It's both an escape and a perilous sentence.

In this new world, Tim encounters his doppelganger, Tavir, a tyrannical dictator with a thirst for power, much like his own desires. The clash between the two Tims propels them into a whirlwind of battles, hardships, destruction, and heartache. Loyalty becomes their salvation, betrayal an overwhelming tide, and death a constant, lurking presence.

As Tim grapples with his transformation through this dystopian fantasy, the line between his innate self and newfound strength blurs. Tavir's menacing shadow looms ever closer, and by the story's conclusion, it becomes clear that more than familiar faces binds these two souls.
